The Italian Dolomites is a truly stunning area of valleys, lakes and forests surrounded by a dramatic mountainous landscape. This north eastern region of Italy, also known as the Italian Alps, is perfect for motorcycling with mountain passes, switchbacks and curves to be enjoyed in amongst beautiful scenery – it is no wonder UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site.
During the 13 days of this tour you will ride through 6 countries, beginning with an afternoon crossing to France via Eurotunnel followed by a welcome dinner at our first hotel of the tour on the outskirts of Lille. We have three transition days crossing through Belgium and Luxembourg, staying one night in the Saarland region of Germany, a second south of the Black Forest and a third night in the Austrian Tyrol.
The mountain passes of the Tyrol form part of our route as we cross the border into Italy where you will be rewarded with your first views of the spectacular Dolomites with their vertical and pale coloured cliffs. On arriving at our spa hotel you can unpack and relax over the following four nights, take advantage of the facilities in the hotel, enjoy the cafe culture in the village or join us on our planned ride-outs which have been designed to show you the best roads, scenery and sights which this region is known for.
There are too many mountain passes to name in this descriptive but on our three ride-out days we will take you some of the best in the region, the high roads are interconnected with pretty valleys and gorges making for enjoyable riding whilst also testing you on some of the many tight turns and hairpins. We ride the Passo del Gardena a gorgeous route winding through the mountains and meadows with switchbacks and stunning views. The Passo de Giau summits at over 2,200 metres with breathtaking vistas and 29 hairpins to enjoy on the descent. We visit Lake Misurina known as “the Pearl of the Dolomites” and famous for being a centre of pure, health-giving air and there will be an opportunity to ascend Piz Boe a high summit at over 3,000 metres via the cable car from Passo Pordoi.
On leaving Italy we transition to Bavaria through Austria and into Germany for a 2 night stay in our next hotel located in a very picturesque lakeside setting with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Tyrol Alps. The hotel has a spa and wellness centre which you may wish to make use of at the end of a days’ motorcycling. Our ride-out is on the Deutsche Alpenstrasse into the Ammergau mountains and along the shores of Lake Plansee.
From Bavaria we head north through the Black Forest and the Danube Valley before crossing the Rhine River into the French Alsace region for an overnight stop, our modern hotel has secure parking welcoming staff and you can be assured of a hearty meal at the adjoining restaurant. We continue north leaving the Alsace crossing into the Parc Naturel de Lorraine on open, flowing roads typical of this region and ride into the French Ardennes to our final hotel of the tour set in the heart of the Argonne Forest. That evening there will be excellent French cuisine to enjoy together with regional wine and coffee. The following morning we have a country route before picking up the autoroute near Reims, the capital of the Champagne region riding north to Calais for an afternoon Eurotunnel crossing to the UK.
